Recycle

Recycling isn’t just something that hippies did in the 70’s – recycling is one of the best things you can do for the environment. Today we recycle one third of the 160 million tons of garbage we create each year, but we can do so much better than that. Recycling reduces the number of landfills that could end up in your back yard and reduces the amount of new natural resources needed to make brand new products, like wood for paper and fossil fuels for plastic.

If your city has designated containers for home recycling pick up, use them. If it doesn't, contact your waste management company and find out where you can recycle. At the very least, find a local supermarket that has bins for recycling and take your cans and bottles there.

Also, before you throw things away, think about what you can give away – which counts as recycling too. Donate books to a library or clothing, blankets etc. to a local shelter. There’s a wonderful organization called Working Wardrobes that helps women and men get back on their feet by dressing them for job interviews and giving them a little more self esteem. Your clothing donations can do great work.
