All electronic devices before take-off

Hopefully your mother nagged you as a child about turning off the lights when you leave a room so we’ll trust that you’re already doing that. Just the same, turn off anything else that sucks power when it’s not in use.

When you’re not using them, turn off and unplug appliances, chargers (ie: cell phone, Ipods etc.), electronic equipment, TVs or computers – they still drain energy even when they’re not in use. Even some small appliances like coffeemakers and microwave ovens do too. Not only will this save electricity, it will also save you lots of money. Did you know that leaving a computer running when it’s not in use costs you on average $0.50 per day! (That's $180+ / year.) Do the same when you’re on vacation or away from home for a few days. Turn your water heater down and unplug all unnecessary appliances (I’d keep the fridge going though – it might get a little nasty in there by the time you get home.)
